We
are often looking for casual staff![]()
and
voluntary help with our Shire horse at Sleekburn![]()
permanent * temporary * casual * voluntary * student placements
Apologies to anyone
who has visited this page and found that the email addresses don’t work. They
do now!
There is only a small staff team at within each of
the three Units, so permanent & temporary vacancies arise only
occasionally. We also need to use casual staff to cover for staff absences, so
we are always interested in recruiting people to our “pool” of casual staff.
Further information on permanent & temporary vacancies and casual work is
given below:
Any permanent posts will be advertised here.
There are no permanent posts at any of the Units at

People who can work for us on an occasional basis
are valuable to our small Units, and we appreciate the work they do and the
skills they bring – often at short notice. We are, however, sometimes short of casual staff and
would be glad to hear from anyone with the appropriate skills and interest and
some time to spare ![]()
If you live locally and have experience of
horticulture and/or working with people with disabilities, and would be
interested in occasional work with us, we would like to hear from you. We can’t
offer any guarantees of work, but if you have the sort of experience we are
looking for, and are good at working with people, then we may be able to offer
you something.
Casual staff are required to complete an application
form, to provide two referees, and to complete a health questionnaire. It is
also necessary for future casual staff to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau
check, which also involves checking ID. If you lack experience, but would like
to obtain paid work with us in the future, then we recommend that you look at
becoming a volunteer.
If you are interested in joining our pool of casual
staff, the contact arrangements are as follows:
to arrange an informal interview, or phone
01670 530111.

If you are interested in working at more than one of
our Units you will only need to come for one interview.
Quite a number of people have volunteered at all
three Units over the years, and we are grateful for their help. As a volunteer
you could help with a wide range of horticultural work, including the growing
of organic vegetables (at Sleekburn) plant production
(at all Units), planting and maintaining flower beds (THS and Hepscott Park)
and woodland work (THS), working alongside people with disabilities who use the
service. At Sleekburn we can also offer the
opportunity to work with a heavy horse (see
below). To become a volunteer you would need to come for a look around and
an informal interview. This will give you a chance to decide if you would like
working with us, and to find out what is involved. It will also give us a
chance to decide if we would like to accept your help. [We have to place a
limit on the number of volunteers that work with us, and we reserve the right
politely to decline your offer of help if we feel it may not be compatible with
the service we are offering to people with disabilities.]
Volunteers are required to complete an application
form, provide two referees, and to make a simple “volunteer’s agreement” with
us. It is also necessary for volunteers to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau
check, which also involves checking ID. To find out more about volunteering at
the Units contact:

Horse helpers needed At
Sleekburn! We
are looking for people to do voluntary work with our Shire horse Pye, to help
us ensure that he is properly cared for and exercised. If you have suitable
experience you could either ride him on the Earth Balance site, or drive our
Victorian carriage with him, as well as helping with feeding, grooming, etc.
We would be interested to hear from anyone who has some time to spare,
preferably on a regular basis, who has appropriate experience and lives
within reasonable travelling distance of Bomarsund (between Blyth &
Ashington). The information about volunteering at |
Our Units can offer placements to students
undertaking the DipSW (Diploma in Social Work) course. We can accommodate one
student placement at a time at each Unit. We have had several students work
with us over the years, and appreciate the help they have given us. We believe
that we can, in return, offer students some valuable experience of an unusual
learning disability service that should also prove enjoyable. It is not
necessary for students to have previous horticultural knowledge or experience,
but it helps if they have an interest in horticulture, and an enthusiasm for
working outdoors.
Our Units can also offer work placements to young
school leavers. Again we are limited to one placement at a time at each Unit.
Placements are co-ordinated by Northumberland Training Agency.
